Deal Close! Newcastle United close in on £9m signing ahead of PSG

Various media outlets are reporting that Newcastle United are close to securing the signature of Lorient defender Raphael Guerreiro. The 21 year old Portuguese international is apparently available for £8.8m with L'Equipe quoting the Lorient president Loic Fery:

"I don’t need to explain why we want €12.5m when Kurzawa and Digne are valued today at €25m. No one is nontransferable, but at a fair price."

Most commonly deployed at left back the youngster is known for his speedy dribbling and ability to attack the flanks, so much so that he has also been used as a wide midfield option.

As you can see above Guerreiro has been an ever present for Lorient in the past two season making 68 league appearances. His seven goals last season also shows the kind of attacking talent he has from wide areas.

Massadio Haidara struggled with the pace down the wing on Sunday vs Southampton with Soares and Tadic getting the better of him. Two of those crosses led to headed goals and with a little more cover, Newcastle could have expected a better result.

Guerreiro seems to have the speed aspect covered and would definitely provide Steve McClaren with some options to deal with sides who attack with pace down the flanks.

THOUGHTS

It doesn't seem a lot of money for a young international left back and his performances have been good enough to alert the likes of PSG and Atletico Madrid to his talents. However he'll also be aware that he's unlikely to jump straight into the first team at either of those sides.

Newcastle United is fast becoming a home for top young talent to develop while also getting the chance to play regular first team football in the worlds most watched and competitive league.

Without an established player in his way at left back, it could be argued that the Magpies represents the best chance to continue his development.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Newcastle will look to build on the point gained vs Southampton as they take on Swansea City on Saturday. The last staging of this fixture saw the points shared in a 2-2 draw and another point might not be the worst result for the McClaren's men.

Starting off with a Newcastle draw could be a fantastic way to add some real value to your Premier League accumulator this weekend.

Oh look – he scored 49 goals – oh no it was just 7 with each shown separately from 7 different angles.

Ever get the feeling someone is trying to con you?
