How do Manchester United rank amongst the ‘big 6’ in 3 key areas?

By Mark Peters IN Archive,General - 10:00 Sep 5th 2015

Manchester United could certainly not be accused of failing to back Louis van Gaal in the transfer market, with Anthony Martial the latest player to arrive at Old Trafford for big money.

On paper, the Red Devils appear to have made a solid, if unspectacular start to the new campaign, but how do their performances in three key areas compare to those of the other major English clubs?

SHOOTING – FOR

Last season, Manchester United converted 17.3% of their chances in the Premier League. This figure has fallen alarmingly to just 11.7% in 2015/16, highlighting perfectly why the club felt the need to splash out on a centre-forward. Despite their problems in front of goal, the Old Trafford outfit have still fared better than Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal in this particular department.

POSSESSION

Amongst the leading top-flight clubs, only Arsenal have enjoyed a greater share of possession than the Red Devils’ 59.5% so far this term. Louis van Gaal’s men don’t enjoy the same sort of reputation for keeping the ball as the Gunners, but his team also boasted an impressive figure of 61.2% during the 2014/15 campaign.

SHOOTING – AGAINST

Having kept a clean sheet in three of their four Premier League matches this season, it is clear that Manchester United have proven difficult to score against. In fact, the Red Devils have conceded to a mere 6.3% of the chances created against them, nearly three times less than defending champions Chelsea have managed.

THOUGHTS

These numbers offer plenty of encouragement to supporters of Manchester United, as their team ranks in the top three positions amongst the elite clubs of English football in all three categories.
