How do Liverpool rank amongst the ‘big 6’ in 3 key areas?

By Mark Peters IN Archive,General - 09:50 Sep 5th 2015

Liverpool’s impressive start to the new season received a sudden reality check as they were heavily beaten at home by West Ham last weekend.

Supporters of the Merseyside outfit will be hoping that this result was just a blip, but how has their form in three key areas measured up to that of their major rivals so far this term?

Brendan Rodgers didn’t have much luck with strikers in 2014/15, but his team as a whole still managed to convert 13.2% of their chances over the course of the entire campaign. Despite investing heavily in the likes of Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino, this figure has fallen to just 8.2% in 2015/16.

Although they have enjoyed more of the ball than their opponents, the 51.3% possession figure for Liverpool this season is the worst amongst the elite clubs of English football. Not only that, but it is also down some 4.5% on what they managed last term.

Given that they have kept three top-flight clean sheets in 2015/16, it comes as no surprise to see that the Reds have conceded to just 8.3% of the chances created against them. This puts Rodgers’ men ahead of Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea in the rankings and is significantly better than the 13.3% figure that they allowed over the course of the previous campaign.

Liverpool supporters have every reason to feel encouraged defensively, but the Reds must be more clinical at the other end of the pitch if they are to secure a top-four finish. Improving their possession statistics would also be a good idea if they want to conserve energy.

In order to score more goals Liverpool should maybe change to a 4-4-2 pattern. There is currently no one who plays off Benteke
