Liverpool supporters would have been loving their team’s start to the season until West Ham rolled into town, but that 3-0 defeat has lowered expectations somewhat.
September brings another trio of Premier League fixtures, but what does history tell us about the Reds’ prospects in their upcoming games?
MANCHESTER UNITED (A)
This is the biggest grudge match in English football and it has not produced too many happy memories for Liverpool fans recently. The Merseyside outfit have suffered ten defeats from their last 13 top-flight trips to Old Trafford, though they have enjoyed a couple of big wins along the way.
NORWICH CITY (H)
Norwich will be absolutely delighted that they no longer have to face their nemesis in the shape of Luis Suarez, but this still looks like a clear home win. The Reds have triumphed in five of their seven Premier League meetings with the Canaries at Anfield, scoring at least three times in all of these successes.
ASTON VILLA (H)
On paper, Aston Villa at home should be a fairly straightforward encounter for Liverpool, yet the last four clashes on Merseyside have yielded a mere two points for the Reds. Christian Benteke has scored three times in these fixtures, however, so his change of colours could prove decisive.
History tells us that Liverpool will be restricted to three or four points from this trio of fixtures, but two wins and a draw would leave them averaging an impressive two points per game for the season as a whole.
