Liverpool chasing star striker to replace injured Sturridge in January

By KickOff IN Archive,General - 19:00 Dec 14th 2015

With injuries to both Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings, Liverpool's striking situation is looking a lot bleaker than it did earlier this season. Jurgen Klopp could do with finding some reinforcements who can add something to his attack without having to break the bank for their signature.

This weekend Bayer Leverkusen's Steven Kiessling fueled rumors that he may be on his way out of Germany with these comments to Sky Sports Deutschland:

"I’ve given it some thought and I will keep thinking about it. The situation is that of course I would like to be playing – I’ve been here for 10 years and love this club and everybody knows how happy I am here.

I’ve got a pretty good relationship with the fans and of course also with the club. I love playing here and I love this club, and it’s overall a very, very difficult situation for me and everybody knows this.

I want to be playing a bit of football at the end of my career and that is why I’ve got to give things good thought."

The Daily Star, The Independant and the Express are now reporting that this discontent will encourage Liverpool to spring into action during the January window.

With Javier Hernandez scoring 10 goals in 11 starts, its unlikely Kiessling is going to get too many opportunities in the near future and a change of team with a well respected German coach at the helm might be just what he needs.

In his last two full seasons, the German international has managed to score an impressive 24 goals in the competitive Bundesliga and his 6' 3" frame should see him take to the physical Premier League like a duck to water.

His ability to act both as a poacher and as a target man would help to both bring in and finish chances the likes of Coutinho, Lallana and Firmino are always going to create.

THOUGHTS

However then the issues is, how much more game time is he likely to get at Liverpool?

Although Daniel Sturridge seemingly can't be relied on this term, Liverpool still have Benteke, Origi (and Firmino) to lead the line. In Benteke they have someone who plays a similar role but has much more Premier League experience under his belt and Kiessling doesn't provide much more than a like for like switch.

Klopp previously hasn't generally included a stereotypical target man in his teams and has tended to buy more complete all rounders such as Aubameyang, Immobile and Lewandowski. Kiessling doesn't really fit this mold and that fact could convince the German manager to keep his powder dry until the summer.

I personally think this is a load of rubbish as most rumours are . Firstly we probably won’t spend any money in January . Secondly this guy is 31 so he wouldn’t exactly be a long term thing and thirdly we’ve done target men plenty of times before and none of them have turned out prolific partly due to our style of play . Carrol, Heskey crouch, morientes, benteke etc . This would be s big waste of time if it were true
