Arsenal plot move for French football’s next superstar

By Mark Peters IN Archive,General - 20:10 Feb 18th 2016

N’Golo Kante’s performance at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon was proof positive of the talent that is lurking in the French league and Arsene Wenger will not want to miss out on another gem.

Nampalys Mendy certainly falls into that category, with the Nice midfielder boasting the tenth-best passing accuracy figures in Europe according to a piece in the Daily Star just before Christmas.

Still just 23 years of age, the diminutive figure has started every Ligue 1 game for his team this season, helping them rise to an unexpected third position in the table.

In fact, since moving to Nice in the summer of 2013, Mendy has missed a grand total of just four top-flight matches, appearing 36 times in each of his two full campaigns:

Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla have all spent significant time on the treatment table for Arsenal this term, so having someone less injury-prone in the midfield engine room would surely be a good thing.

Adept at breaking up play, shielding his defence and keeping things simple, the 23-year-old is essentially a more defensively-minded version of Leicester’s Kante, as proven by their top-flight statistics last season:

With champions league football Leicester do not need to sell, I predict (and I accept I may be wrong) Arsenal will be fighting Southampton for a champions league place that spurs or Leicester for the title come may. I think it will be Southampton who has the biggest say on positions this season.
