Juventus recovered from a slow start to secure a fifth consecutive Serie A title last season, so can anybody stop them continuing their recent dominance in 2016/17?
After seven games of the current campaign, the answer to that question would appear to be no. Massimiliano Allegri’s charges have already established a four-point lead at the top of the Serie A table, only slipping up against Inter Milan.
The Old Lady may be champions-in-waiting, but what of the other sides with aspirations of running them close or at least qualifying for the Champions League?
NAPOLI – 14 POINTS
Napoli have established themselves as the main challengers to Juventus of late and they are currently averaging two points per game. Defeats like the one that they suffered at Atalanta on Sunday prove that they are far from being the finished article though.
ROMA – 13 POINTS
The side from the Italian capital are exciting to watch, scoring 16 goals and conceding nine in their seven top-flight matches so far this season. One major concern would be their away record, with just a single point collected on their travels this term.
LAZIO – 13 POINTS
Lazio have surprised many with their impressive start to the current campaign, though it is important to remember that three of their four victories have come against bottom-five clubs. Defeats at the hands of Juventus and AC Milan suggest that they are in a false position.
AC MILAN – 13 POINTS
AC Milan are a work in progress under Vincenzo Montella, but a return of ten points from their previous four matches suggests that things are starting to come together. No team in the top-nine has conceded more goals, so this is definitely an area to work on.
INTER MILAN – 11 POINTS
As the only side to have beaten Juventus in 2016/17, Inter Milan have to be viewed as contenders for a top-three finish. Frank De Boer impressed during his time in charge of Ajax and he will get things right at the San Siro if he is afforded the opportunity to do so.
Juventus will win Serie A at a canter, but the race for Champions League qualification should keep things interesting towards the top of the table. Napoli have to be favourites to finish as runners-up, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Inter Milan claiming third place.
