Why Netherlands v France acts as Liverpool v Manchester United preview

By Mark Peters IN General,Match Preview - 20:10 Oct 9th 2016

Countries with the footballing pedigree of Netherlands and France should not really be in the same group for World Cup qualifying, but that is the reality of the situation.

Between them, the two managers have selected 17 Premier League players in their squads, so fans of English football have plenty of reason for paying close attention to proceedings.

GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM VS PAUL POGBA

Central midfield will be one of the key battlegrounds in this high-profile clash, with Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum taking on Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

It has been a slow start to the season for both men in terms of their attacking contribution, but they are settling into life at new clubs:

We know from their efforts for Newcastle and Juventus last term, however, that they are capable of making an impression in the final-third, with Wijnaldum managing 11 goals and five assists in the Premier League and Pogba weighing in with eight goals and 12 assists in Serie A:

Given that the pair will lock horns again at Anfield seven days after this encounter, it will be interesting to see whether or not either of them is able to exert their authority in this contest.
