Arsene Wenger has shown in the past that he is willing to spend big on the right players, shelling out £42.4m on Mesut Özil and £31.7m on Alexis Sanchez.
Now, reports in the Daily Express suggest that he is looking to bring Jan Oblak to North London, though the Arsenal boss is unwilling to meet the goalkeeper’s £85m release clause.
It should not be assumed that any deal for the Slovenia international is dead in the water, however, as Atletico Madrid’s inability to keep pace with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga could lead him to consider his future at the club.
The 23-year-old has been an absolute revelation since signing for Diego Simeone’s men in the summer of 2014, firmly establishing himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers:

His 62 top-flight starts have yielded an incredible 37 clean sheets, with just 35 goals conceded and 79% of the shots that he has faced being kept out.
Petr Cech’s numbers for both Chelsea and Arsenal have been similarly impressive during the same period, albeit not quite as good, but the experienced custodian is on the home stretch of his career, so it makes sense that the Gunners would be looking at possible replacements.
