Villa Swoop for Premier League Winger

By Joel Turner IN General,Transfers - 20:05 Jan 11th 2017

Knocked out of the FA Cup at the weekend, Villa's hopes of redeeming a difficult season and returning to the Premier League at the first attempt rest on securing a play-off position. With that in mind, Villa's wealthy Chinese owners are keen sanction deals this month that will materially help that become a reality.

One name on the transfer shortlist is Leicester winger Jeffrey Schlupp, with The Guardian reporting the Villains are rivalling West Brom and Crystal Palace for the Ghanaian's signature.

Surprisingly left out of his national side's Africa Cup of Nations squad, Schlupp has been a peripheral figure for Leicester this season, making just six appearances in all competitions.

The German-born player is being allowed to leave by the Champions, who in return want £12 million for his transfer.

Capable of playing at both left-back and on the wing, Schlupp's versatility and energy would make him well-suited to Steve Bruce's side - and he would likely add much-need competition for Jack Grealish.

Their stats are broadly comparable last season, when they both last appeared in the Premier League. Slightly different in style, Schlupp's ability at left-back would also allow Steve Bruce to play a wing-back system if required.
