Chelsea Chasing Midfield Maestro With Stats to Match Lampard

Chelsea look set to run away with this season’s Premier League title, with manager Antonio Conte having thus far masterminded one of the most impressive debut seasons England’s top division has seen. Their combination of a rock-solid defense and vibrant attack has won many admirers, but reports continue to suggest that reinforcements will be sought in the summer.

Specifically, Conte is believed to want another central midfielder. Only N’golo Kante and Nemanja Matic have appeared in more than 50% of the Blues’ league season thus far, and the Italian is keen to share the workload around more evenly next season when European football returns to Stamford Bridge.

French newspaper L’Equipe is today reporting that Monaco starlet Thomas Lemar is currently Chelsea’s top target, and is stalling on signing a new contract with the Ligue 1 leaders in order to keep his options open. But if he did make the move, what could The Shed End faithful expect to see?

The answer, quite simply, is a bit of everything. A wonderfully balanced player, Lemar is currently contributing more in attack than the likes of Chelsea’s Willian and from a less advanced midfield position.

During his Ligue 1 career, Lemar has averaged a goal or assist once every 75 minutes of play. Chelsea legend Frank Lampard averaged a goal or assist once every 140 minutes of play during his Premier League career with the Blues, and whilst that was obviously over a far longer period of time, it’s an interesting reference point for Lemar’s outstanding current level of output.

Defensively, Lemar's work rate has also contributed to Monaco’s current success. The side have kept 11 clean sheets in Ligue 1 this term, and 9 of those have come in the youngster’s 17 starts.

At 21-years-old, Lemar has the footballing world at his feet. A big move surely beckons for this exceptional talent, and Conte will be doing all he can to ensure that move sees him in the blue of Chelsea as soon as possible.
