Could This Italian International Take Arsenal To The Next Level?

By timgarrett IN General,Premier League,Transfers - 19:30 Feb 21st 2017

Arsenal’s win last night over Sutton United was greeted more with relief than joy, as the Gunners managed to end a turbulent spell with progress to the FA Cup quarter finals. Disquiet remains amongst the fans, however, with many still believing top quality signings are required in order to challenge for the main honours. Fortunate, then, that the club are reported to be planning a summer swoop for a potential star.

Lorenzo Insigne has long been touted as a hot prospect in Italy, and The Sun is reporting that Arsenal sent scouts to watch him play for Napoli against Chievo at the weekend. The game came just 4 days after his sensational strike against Real Madrid in the Champions League, and Insigne was again on the score sheet in a 3-1 victory.

With 155 Serie A appearances and 13 Italy caps to his name, Insigne is clearly a high-level operator, but can he be the new hero Arsenal fans are looking for?

Theo Walcott is often seen as emblematic of the issues at Arsenal – a player who repeatedly underachieves but remains in and around the 1st team – and as a replacement for him, Insigne could be perfect. His pace and dynamism mean could stretch teams as Walcott does, but with a more reliable output. Since the start of last season he has 7 more league goals and has bagged 12 more league assists than Walcott, albeit in 1,525 more minutes of playing time.

Napoli have been Serie A’s most potent attacking force this season, averaging a goal every 37.5 minutes, and Insigne has been a vital component. Starting in all but two games, he has contributed 8 goals and 6 assists to the Gli Azzurri‘s outstanding total of 60 goals. If he could help Arsenal reach such levels, the fans’ dreams of lifting the Premier League trophy once again could move a step closer.
