Chelsea Chasing All-Time Premier League Leading Light

Romelu Lukaku has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League, revealing in multiple interviews and tweets his admiration for the competition. But as his former club Chelsea prepare to return to Europe’s top table, could Lukaku be for a return of his own?

Reports over recent weeks have suggested that Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is chasing a number of attacking reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window, from Alvaro Morata to Lorenzo Insigne and back, but it’s the link between Everton’s Belgian forward and Chelsea that refuses to go away.

Some say that going back rarely works in football, but if Lukaku were to make a Stamford Bridge return, what exactly would Chelsea be getting for their suggested £70m?

The answer, unsurprisingly, is goals. A shed load of goals. Since arriving in the Premier League Lukaku has found the net an incredible 77 times, adding his name to an elite list of players to break the 50 goal barrier before turning 23. When considering that Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only others on that list, the size of his achievement is clear.

Lukaku also has the ability to create for others, with 29 assists to his name in England’s top flight, and this aspect of his game makes him all the more appealing. When combining goals and assists, he is directly involved in a goal on average every 122 minutes of play; a record slap-bang between those of current Chelsea stars Diego Costa (every 107 minutes) and Eden Hazard (every 148 minutes).

Young, stunningly talented and with his best years ahead of him, this is a big money striker based on Merseyside that Chelsea are unlikely to regret opening their chequebooks for.
