It may not have been a classic, but Sunday’s victory over Manchester United was still as sweet as they come for Arsenal. A win for Wenger against his old foe, a knock-back for the side from Old Trafford and reinvigorated hopes of a top 4 finish. It was a big one.
What the Gunners must now do is follow it up with another win and apply the pressure to those above them. Their opportunity to do exactly that comes tomorrow evening as they visit Southampton.
The Saints have had a mixed season, with new manager and Wenger protégé Claude Puel failing to win over much of the fan base despite maintaining a respectable 10th spot in the Premier League and reaching the EFL Cup final. A big, end of season win here would provide a much-needed boost, but can they grab it?
|ATTACKING FORM AVERAGES|
|DEFENSIVE FORM AVERAGES|
Our Ultimate Form Guide (above) suggests that’s unlikely, with Arsenal topping their opponents in 12 out of 15 key statistical areas over their last 10 respective outings.
Arsenal’s conversion rate has been creeping up in recent weeks, and at 19% they’re now beginning to take a very decent number of the chances they’re creating. At just 13%, it’s a level Southampton cannot currently keep up with.
Both sides have kept 4 clean sheets in their last 10, but Southampton have managed to concede 4 more goals than Arsenal in the other 6 games, including 3 at home the last time a top 6 side came to visit.
Overall, the smart money has to be on an Arsenal win here. Wenger has overseen late surges into the Champions League spots on numerous occasions previously, could he be about to do it again?
