Chelsea make massive move for key summer target

Antonio Conte’s decision to switch to a three-man defence at the beginning of October proved to be an absolute masterstroke, with his team going on to romp to the Premier League title.

So good in fact were the newly-formed trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill, that they actually helped the Blues to keep ten clean sheets in their next 12 top-flight fixtures.

It would be easy to assume therefore that there is little room for improvement, however that would be to ignore the fact that the West London outfit managed just five shutouts in the 20 Premier League games that followed that remarkable run of early success.

KALIDOU KOULIBALY

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly was thought to be a transfer target last summer and the English champions have not given up on signing him if reports in The Sun of a recent £52.5m bid are to be believed.

The Serie A side are said to have rejected this offer for a player who made a huge difference to their defensive record in 2016/17, though their inability to keep hold of Gonzalo Higuain when Juventus came calling suggests that a deal remains possible:

Somewhat remarkably, Italian football’s third-placed team failed to keep a single clean sheet in the ten top-flight matches that Koulibaly missed last term, conceding at a rate of 1.6 goals per game.

It was a different story when the Senegalese international took to the pitch, however, with Napoli keeping 12 clean sheets in 28 matches and conceding at a rate of just 0.8 goals per game:

A commanding physical presence who appears ideally-suited to life in the Premier League, the 25-year-old has played a part in 31 shutouts during his time in Serie A.
