Manchester United plot move for Pogba’s perfect partner

By Mark Peters IN General,Premier League,Transfers - 19:45 Jun 23rd 2017

Despite conceding just 29 goals in their 38 top-flight matches last season, a record only bettered by runners-up Tottenham on 26, Manchester United have already looked to strengthen their defence this summer with the signing of Victor Lindelof.

What the Red Devils really lack, however, is a defensive midfielder who can come into the side and do the dirty work for Paul Pogba, thus freeing up the French international to unleash his true potential.

Eric Dier has been mentioned as a possibility, but reports in the Daily Express suggest that Jose Mourinho is ready to turn to Nemanja Matic, a player who served him well at Stamford Bridge.

NEMANJA MATIC

The 28-year-old was a key man for the current Manchester United boss as Chelsea claimed the Premier League title back in 2014/15, missing just two games as he provided a vital defensive shield in front of the back-four.

He was heavily involved again last season under Antonio Conte, even chipping in with seven top-flight assists, though his efforts were somewhat overshadowed by those of his partner in the middle of the park, N’Golo Kante:

It is thought that AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko remains a prime target for the Blues, meaning that Matic could well be more available than Tottenham’s Dier.

The Serbian international certainly doesn’t lack for experience, clocking up 123 games in the Premier League and his record in recent seasons suggests that he doesn’t miss many games through injury or suspension:

Although this signing would be unlikely to get too many pulses racing around Old Trafford, most successful teams have a destroyer in the engine room and Matic could perform an important role for the Red Devils in the years to come.
