Manchester United plot unexpected move for Bundesliga star

By Mark Peters IN Bundesliga,General,Premier League,Transfers - 19:49 Jul 9th 2017

Manchester United are clearly on the lookout for a holding midfielder this summer, with Jose Mourinho keen to free up Paul Pogba to express himself and make more of an impact than he did in his debut campaign.

The Frenchman appeared to be playing with the handbrake on for much of last season, so finding someone to compliment him in the engine room is essential if the Red Devils are to bring the best out of their star man.

Eric Dier and Nemanja Matic have both been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but now reports in the Daily Mail are suggesting that German international Julian Weigl could also be a target.

JULIAN WEIGL

Still just 21 years of age, a broken ankle meant that the youngster was unable to feature for his country in either their European Under-21 Championship or Confederations Cup successes this summer.

He is likely to form part of the squad that will defend their World Cup title in 12 months’ time, however, having firmly established himself as a regular for Borussia Dortmund:

Despite never having played in the Bundesliga prior to signing for his current employers back in 2015, the midfielder has already clocked up around 60 top-flight games for the club, the vast majority of which have come as a starter.

Said to be an excellent trainer and someone who covers a lot of ground out on the pitch, the 21-year-old is known for going about his business in a calm and measured fashion, patrolling the ground in front of the back-four and passing with accuracy:

It is also worth noting just how much better Borussia Dortmund were defensively in the Bundesliga last season in matches in which Weigl started, conceding 1.9 fewer goals per game than they did when he wasn’t involved at all.

    Unexpected move?
This rumour has been in most media circles for the last week, so for ‘kickoff’ it may be unexpected but not for everyone else!
