Manchester United plot ambitious move for world-class 27-year-old

Manchester United clearly mean business in the transfer market this summer, already spending a total of more than £100m on the captures of Victor Lindelof from Benfica and Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

The Red Devils are not the only European heavyweights to be making significant moves, however, with Bayern Munich yesterday securing a two-year loan deal for Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez.

According to reports in the Daily Star, the Colombian international’s switch could be of particular interest to the Old Trafford outfit, with long-time target Thomas Müller now more likely to be available.

Although he seems to have been around forever, the versatile forward is still only 27 years of age, whilst he is a proven winner for both club and country.

For whatever reason, current boss Carlo Ancelotti appears to have less faith in the youth team product than Louis van Gaal, Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola did before him, with just 20 of his 29 Bundesliga appearances in 2016/17 lasting for the full 90 minutes:

Despite not having the complete trust of his manager, Müller still managed to make a direct contribution to 16 top-flight goals, though this was down on the 24 that he was involved in during the previous campaign.

Blessed with a knack for finding himself in the right place at the right time, the German international possesses an excellent work ethic and the sort of winning mentality that Jose Mourinho is looking for in his squad:

He also boasts considerable experience on the Champions League stage, scoring nearly 40 goals in the competition, and few opposition defences would relish coming up against a front-three of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Lukaku and Müller.
