Chelsea plot shock move for dynamic star of Euro 2016

Chelsea were simply superb last season, romping to the Premier League title by seven points, but it has not been a smooth summer for the West London outfit with uncertainty surrounding the future of several players.

Over at Bayern Munich, former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has been busy in the transfer market of late, loaning in James Rodriguez and loaning out Douglas Costa.

According to reports in The Sun last month, the Brazilian was one of two players deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian, with the Stamford Bridge outfit thought to be keen on the other one, Renato Sanches.

RENATO SANCHES

The Portuguese youngster endured a disappointing debut campaign with the Bundesliga giants, failing to establish himself as a first-team regular at the Allianz Arena following his €35m summer switch from Benfica.

In fact, the 19-year-old did not manage to make more than three top-flight appearances in any given month, starting just six times in total and failing to weigh in with a single goal or assist:

These are hardly the sort of numbers to set pulses racing at Stamford Bridge, or anywhere else for that matter, but it should not be forgotten just what an important player the teenager became for Portugal during their unexpected march to Euro 2016 success.

An absolute ball of energy in midfield, Sanches won UEFA’s ‘Young Player of the Tournament’ award after breaking into Fernando Santos’ side, impressing with his technical ability and his lung-bursting forward runs:

Bayern Munich actually enjoyed marginally better results when the Portuguese international was involved last season and their loss would be Chelsea’s gain, particularly if the Blues could get him for a bargain price.
