Arsenal plot sensational signing of Premier League star

Not participating in the Champions League will seem somewhat strange to Arsenal and their supporters, but the signing of Alexandre Lacazette suggests that it will have little impact upon their ability to attract top players.

Although many fans would like to see further defensive additions to go with that of Sead Kolasinac, Arsene Wenger has always had a penchant for bringing in more technically-gifted midfielders and forwards.

That could be the case once again if reports in the Evening Standard are to be believed, with the Gunners said to be keen on challenging Tottenham for the services of Ross Barkley.

ROSS BARKLEY

Currently sidelined for around a month following groin surgery, Spurs are unlikely to meet Everton’s £50m valuation of a player who will be out of contract next summer, thus leaving the door open for their North London rivals to swoop in.

It is not thought that Arsenal would go that high either, but the Toffees may be prepared to settle for less in order to avoid losing the local lad for free when his current deal expires:

What is certain is just what an impact the 23-year-old is capable of making in the Premier League, as evidenced by his return of 13 goals and 16 assists across the previous two campaigns.

Extremely comfortable on the ball, but with a physical edge to his game, Barkley is not quite at the level of Mesut Özil just yet, though he is not far off:

In fact, it is only really in terms of assists that the Arsenal playmaker has been streets ahead of his Everton counterpart in the last couple of seasons and some of the difference can be attributed to the fact that the German has been turning out for a stronger side.
