Chelsea line up shock move for Serie A star

It would be fair to say that the defence of Chelsea’s Premier League title did not get off to the best of starts, with Burnley’s 3-2 success at Stamford Bridge made worse by the suspensions picked up by Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas.

Eden Hazard, Victor Moses, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Pedro and Diego Costa also missed that encounter for one reason or another, further highlighting the Blues’ need to strengthen their squad before the close of the transfer window.

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Ivan Perisic has emerged as a surprise target for the West London outfit, though Manchester United remain interested in a player that they have courted throughout the summer.

Most comfortable operating down the left, but also able to do a job on the right or in the no.10 role, the attacking midfielder has amassed over 50 caps for Croatia, featuring in each of the last three major international tournaments.

At club level, the 28-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Inter Milan, impressing with both his energy and technical quality in a team that has failed to hit the heights:

Rarely injured, Perisic has featured in 70 of his side’s 76 top-flight matches during his time at the San Siro, weighing in with a total of 18 goals and 14 assists along the way.

A strong runner both with and without the ball, the Croatian international’s numbers in Serie A over the course of the last couple of campaigns are actually better than those put up by Willian in the Premier League:

Although the Brazilian remains a firm favourite with supporters at Stamford Bridge, Antonio Conte seems less convinced by him, so there is definitely scope for another signing in this area of the pitch.

Don’t sell William, buy Vardy or Belotti or both, and retain Diego Costa if possible
