Chelsea plot shock move for world-class defensive colossus

By Mark Peters IN General,Premier League,Transfers - 19:45 Aug 22nd 2017

Antonio Conte surprised with his team selection at Wembley yesterday afternoon, moving David Luiz into midfield and naming Andreas Christensen as part of his back-three.

The switch certainly proved effective as the Blues got the better of Tottenham, though the inclusion of the promising young Danish defender highlighted a lack of experience beneath the familiar starting XI.

That could all be about to change if reports in the Daily Star are to be believed, however, with Chelsea set to make a move for Toby Alderweireld if his contractual issues continue.

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD

Part of a Spurs defence that has conceded fewer Premier League goals than any other team across the last two Premier League seasons, the Belgian international was named in the ‘PFA Team of the Year’ back in 2015/16.

Said to earn a weekly wage of around £50,000, his current employers seem reluctant to offer a significant increase to that figure, something that the Stamford Bridge outfit would be prepared to do:

Having featured in every top-flight game during the 2015/16 campaign, keeping 13 clean sheets along the way, Alderweireld then played a part in 15 shutouts in his 30 Premier League appearances in 2016/17.

When the 28-year-old was missing last term, Spurs certainly suffered, conceding an extra 0.4 goals per match and collecting 0.5 fewer points per game along the way:

Physically dominant, yet comfortable on the ball, the former Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Southampton defender also has experience of playing in a back-three, whilst Kyle Walker’s £45m move to Manchester City proves that every Tottenham player has his price.
