Liverpool line up midfield maestro with a glittering CV

Although questions remain over Liverpool’s ability to challenge for the Premier League title this season, a return of four points from two games already has them above the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea in the table.

The Merseyside outfit’s unsuccessful pursuit of Naby Keita does reveal, however, that Jürgen Klopp remains keen to strengthen his options in the middle of the park.

According to reports in the Daily Star, the Anfield outfit could be about to bring in Mateo Kovacic to fill that role, with ‘a verbal agreement’ said to have been reached to sign the Real Madrid midfielder.

MATEO KOVACIC

Unable to force his way into the European champions’ team at the expense of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric or Casemiro, the 23-year-old is thought to be keen to secure more regular first-team football.

During his two full seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Croatian international has clocked up a decent haul of 52 appearances in La Liga, though just 27 of these have come from the start:

Comfortable operating in a variety of central roles, Kovacic has largely been used as a sitting midfielder during his time in the Spanish capital, thus explaining his limited attacking contribution.

Moving to Liverpool would likely provide the two-time Champions League winner with greater licence to show off his skills, most notably his range of passing and his ability to drive forward with the ball:

It should not be forgotten, either, that the Croatian spent 2.5 seasons at Inter Milan prior to his move to Madrid, giving him valuable experience of life at another big club in a top European league.

Mateo Kovacic is a good player but if Coutinho is staying, then we may not need him. What LFC need now is a natural number 9 and a solid central defender. Sell Coutinho and buy Kovacic, Van Djik and Diego Costa and win the league.

There doesn’t need to be a debate on this, Kovacic is a quality player and we need a stronger squad. Can will probably soon be off and Kovacic is an upgrade on both he and Lucas. Predict he will sign and take the no 8 shirt. Great player for turning defence into attack, dynamic box to box guy with a nice bag of tricks. Obviously Klopp’s bckup plan since we are not getting Keita.
