Will Mourinho Break From Type? Manchester United’s Predicted Line-Up v Chelsea

By timgarrett IN Lineup,Premier League - 10:00 Nov 5th 2017

It has been a curious season so far for Manchester United and José Mourinho. An opening flurry of expansive play and 4-0 wins was halted by a stale 0-0 draw at Anfield 3 weeks ago, and since that point much of the talk around the club has been critical.

Yet while it’s true that their play hasn’t always been easy on the eye, they’re still very much getting the job done (an unfortunate afternoon at Huddersfield aside, obviously). Only Manchester City sit above them in the Premier League and they have a 100% record in cup competitions, so talk of unrest is surely massively premature.

Still, Mourinho will be keen to prove the doubters wrong, and how better to do that than with an away win against Chelsea? If he’s to get that on Sunday he will have to get his team selection right, and this is the XI we expect him to go with:

United have employed a back three a number of times in recent weeks, and look set to continue with that approach here. Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling have kept clean sheets in 50% of the matches they have started together up to this point.

The center of United’s midfield continues to suffer from injuries, with Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini unavailable once more. The midfield partnership of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matić impressed last week against Tottenham, however, and can surely be relied upon once more here.

Romelu Lukaku is currently on a 5 game goalless run after a prolific start to life at Old Trafford, and will be keen to get going once more against his former club. Supported by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford, he will stand every chance of doing exactly that.

Overall, it’s an incredibly strong United side and one which stands an excellent chance of overcoming stuttering Chelsea. With huge odds of 40/1 available on an away win for new Betfair, they’re well worth backing.
