Lemar vs Mahrez – The Stats Reveal Who Arsenal Should Target In January

By timgarrett IN Premier League,Transfers - 18:15 Jan 2nd 2018

Alexis Sanchez has been one of the best players in the Premier League since signing for Arsenal, delivering a consistent supply of goals and effort, but failure to secure a summer switch to Manchester City has left the 29-year-old well off the pace this term.

Pep Guardiola remains a huge fan of the Chilean international, however, and the injury picked up by Gabriel Jesus at Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve could mean that the Citizens reignite their interest in January.

The deal may well have gone through back in August had the Gunners been able to secure a replacement, namely AS Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, but should they target the Frenchman again or go after Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez if Sanchez does leave this winter?

Thomas Lemar vs Riyad Mahrez

According to reports in the Evening Standard, Arsenal tabled a bid of around £75m plus £17m in add-ons for Lemar back in the summer, whereas AS Roma failed to match the Foxes’ £50m valuation of Mahrez, so it is the Monaco man who would cost more.

Based on the top-flight form of the two men since the beginning of the 2015/16 campaign, however, this yawning gap can only be justified by comparing the relative ages of the pair, with the French international nearly five years younger than his Algerian counterpart:

Although he has started 1.5 times as many games, Leicester’s star performer has weighed in with twice as many goals, including nine more winning efforts, whilst he has already proven his value on the Premier League stage:

It is also worth noting just how much more effective Mahrez has been than Lemar during the current campaign, directly involving himself in 14 goals to the Frenchman’s six, so the decision should be an easy one for Arsene Wenger to make.

The Acca Smacker

There's plenty of action to keep us entertained this evening, with 8 of the Premier Leagues 20 sides in action, and the KickOff's all-new Acca Smacker is the place to build a winning bet.

Manchester City may have lost their winning run last time out, but the 'Form Stats' tab reveals that they've still won 9 in a row on home turf. Meanwhile fortunes in the Midlands could scarcely have been more different of late, with West Brom and Birmingham on 19 and 12 match winless runs respectively.
