Arsenal Make Their Move For Top Quality Cech Replacement

Unai Emery has a big job on his hands at Arsenal, so it is important that he spends whatever money he is given in the transfer market wisely if he is to get the Gunners anywhere near back towards challenging for major honours.

Stephan Lichtsteiner will bring some much-needed experience to the defensive unit, but one position that desperately needs addressing is goalkeeper, with Petr Cech looking a shadow of his former self and David Ospina far from convincing.

According to the latest media reports, Emery has set his sights on a man whom he made his no.1 at Sevilla, Sergio Rico, with the 24-year-old possibly looking for a fresh start after falling out of favour towards the back end of last season.

Although he is not that old for a goalkeeper, the Spanish international is certainly not lacking in experience, having already clocked up over 100 appearances in La Liga over the course of the previous four campaigns:

Truth be told, the Sevilla custodian’s numbers are slightly down on those put up by Cech in the Premier League during the same period, though saving 69% of the shots taken against him is respectable enough.

Measured against Ospina, however, Rico is somewhat further adrift, albeit that the Colombian has spent far less time on the pitch, so Arsenal would certainly not be getting a keeper with incredible statistics:

The Spaniard is young enough to make dramatic improvements to his game, mind you, and playing for a manager who trusts him is likely to bring the best out of an individual who is known for his imposing presence between the sticks.
