Everton Plot Stunning Move For Spanish World Cup Star

The 2017/18 season was, undoubtedly, one to forget for Everton. Three managers played their part in leading the club to an underwhelming 8th placed finish despite serious investment during the previous summer, and much better must be expected this time around.

In Marco Silva, the Toffees at least have a manager behind which their fanbase can unite, and the Portuguese tactician has already set about outlining his plans for his debut campaign at Goodison Park.

It’s clear for all to see that more goals need to be added to the squad, with a tally of 44 in the Premier League last time out the club’s worst since the 2005/06 season, and Silva is believed to be targeting a box office name to fill the void.

Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas is no stranger to Merseyside having had a relatively unsuccessful spell with Liverpool previously, but he has flourished since returning to his homeland.

His prolific goalscoring rate has seen him picked in the Spanish World Cup squad ahead of the likes of Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata, and it’s far superior to the numbers put up by any of Everton’s leading attacking lights last season:

Wayne Rooney may be set for an imminent departure to the MLS, but he was still Everton’s top scorer last time out. His minute per goal rate, however, was still a full 94 worse than Aspas’.

Oumar Niasse has become something of a controversial figure at Goodison Park, but few could argue with a record of 8 goals in 10 Premier League starts. Despite that, Aspas, though, still showed that he can be more prolific last season and did so over a longer period of time.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is undoubtedly one for the future, and he showed glimpses of his ability last season. With a goal every 469 minutes of play on average, however, he simply cannot be relied upon as Aspas can.

While Liverpool connections may take time to fade in the minds of the Everton faithful, there can be no doubt that the signing of Aspas would represent a major coup for the club. He has proven that he can be relied upon for goals at the highest level, and right now that’s all that really matters for Marco Silva & Co.
