Liverpool’s Sensational Swoop For Spanish World Cup Superstar

Liverpool have already displayed plenty of ambition in the transfer market this summer, recruiting Naby Keita from RB Leipzig and Fabinho from AS Monaco, though their unsuccessful pursuit of Lyon’s Nabil Fekir shows that they are not finished yet.

Despite the Reds’ brilliance in the final third of the pitch last season, it is clear that Jürgen Klopp wants another creative option to throw into the attacking mix, as Philippe Coutinho has yet to be replaced at Anfield.

Step forward Marco Asensio if recent media reports are to be believed, with the highly-rated 22-year-old thought to be considering his options amid speculation that Neymar will join Real Madrid following the World Cup.

Set to feature for Spain in this summer’s global showpiece, the former Real Mallorca youngster has featured in La Liga in each of the previous three campaigns, firstly on loan at Espanyol and then for his current employers:

A return of 13 goals and 18 assists shows real promise, particularly when competing against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema for playing time, though Asensio’s top-flight goal tally cannot match that of Fekir during the same period.

An effortless mover with the ball, the 22-year-old has certainly demonstrated that he is a man for the big occasion, scoring against Juventus in the 2017 Champions League Final, as well as against Bayern Munich in both the 2017 Quarter-Final and the 2018 Semi-Final:

To put things in context, Asensio has made a direct contribution to twice as many goals as Isco in Europe’s premier club competition over the course of the last couple of campaigns, and his pace and directness would seem to suit Liverpool’s energetic style.
