The eyes of the globe may be on the now underway World Cup in Russia, but Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has his mind firmly in Glasgow. The new domestic season is just a couple of months away and, once again, he has big plans.
The back-to-back trebles won during the last two seasons are undoubtedly remarkable achievements, but those in charge at Celtic Park now have even bigger aspirations. Serious challenges in Europe are required, and new signings must be made if they’re to become a reality.
Reports in Spain suggest that Rodgers is set for a remarkable raid in the north of the country, with recently relegated Deportivo de La Coruña the victims. He wants their centre-back Fabian Schär to make the move to Scotland, and he’s willing to stump up a sizable transfer fee to make it happen.
While a recent relegation doesn’t look good on any player’s CV, there can be no doubt that Schär has quality. He’s currently preparing to compete in the World Cup with his Swiss international colleagues, and his performances for Deportivo last season were a bright spot in an otherwise miserable campaign:

Schär missed 13 of Deportivo 38 La Liga outings last season through injury, and it must be tempting for the club’s fans to wonder what might have been had he been available throughout the campaign.
His defensive influence was clear to see in their average minutes per goal against, which encouragingly rose from 40.2 minutes to 58.5 minutes with the 26-year-old in the side.
Missing out on survival by 14 points, however, what Deportivo really needed was points. Schär had the ability to help significantly in this area. The side’s win rate shot up by 12% with him on the pitch, and an extension of this throughout the season could have been enough to spare them.
With Switzerland kicking off their campaign in Russia against Brazil on Sunday, now may not be the right time to push through a deal. Yet negotiations look set to continue nonetheless and, should Celtic manage to get a deal over the line, this could be a real coup for the ambitious Scottish giants.
