Manchester United Set To Increase €50 Offer For World-Class Defender

By timgarrett IN Premier League,Transfers - 12:25 Jul 6th 2018

It is probably fair to say that the mood amongst Manchester United supporters is not one of optimism heading into the new season, with the signings of Diogo Dalot and Fred not exactly of the marquee variety.

Perhaps that is exactly what the Red Devils need, however, after bringing in a series of big names such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez since Jose Mourinho picked up the managerial reins at Old Trafford.

If recent media reports are to be believed, then the next man through the doors this summer could well be an unheralded name as well, with AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli said to have been the subject of an initial failed bid of €50.

An unsung hero at the heart of the Italian side’s defence, expulsion from European competition next season means that the 23-year-old could be tempted by a move away from the San Siro, particularly to a Champions League club.

Over the course of the previous four top-flight campaigns, the first of which was spent on loan at Sampdoria from AS Roma, Romagnoli has been an incredibly consistent performer, averaging a clean sheet roughly once every three games:

Although these numbers are not quite as impressive as those put up by another rumoured target, Leonardo Bonucci, in Serie A during the same period, it is important to remember that Romagnoli is a much younger man who hasn’t had the luxury of playing for Juventus:

In fact, the playing field was much more even when the two men were central defensive partners at AC Milan last season, and lining up alongside such a wily character can only have helped the 23-year-old to fine tune his game in preparation for what would be a major move.
