Liverpool Battling Fierce Rivals To Sign World Cup Star

By timgarrett IN Premier League,Transfers - 12:25 Jul 6th 2018

The 2018/19 campaign will be a big one for Liverpool, with much expected of a team that reached the final of the Champions League last term, so it is important that they get things right in the transfer market this summer.

Having already brought both Naby Keita and Fabinho to the club, the signs are certainly encouraging on that front, though most supporters would probably like to see some defensive reinforcements added to Jürgen Klopp’s squad as well.

According to the latest media reports, one surprise centre-back target for the Reds could well be Domagoj Vida, with the Croatian international currently starring alongside Dejan Lovren for his country at the World Cup in Russia.

Valued in excess of €20m and also thought to be a target for Everton, the 29-year-old only joined his current employers, Besiktas, back in January, with the Turkish giants clearly enjoying an upturn in fortunes when the defender took to the pitch:

In fact, the Istanbul-based club won an extra 25% of their top-flight matches when Vida was involved during the 2017/18 campaign, though they were restricted to only three clean sheets during his 13 appearances.

The former Dynamo Kiev man’s defensive numbers would be a worry, particularly when measured against those put up by Lovren in the Premier League during the current calendar year, but the duo do seem to have struck up a great understanding for their country:

Were Vida to make the move to Anfield, however, then he would be competing with his international colleague for the right to partner Virgil van Dijk, so opportunities to build upon their World Cup shutouts against Nigeria and Argentina would be limited.
