World Cup fever is in full flow on both sides of the Channel, as both England and France prepare for their semi-final clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. For one of the nations’ biggest clubs, however, that all appears to be of little interest.
Manchester United are busy making plans for next season, and a key part of that seems to be the acquisition of one of France’s star men. Atlético Madrid's Lucas Hernández has been linked repeatedly in recent days, and the rumours are gathering momentum.
The versatile defender has been in the Spanish capital since 2007 when he joined Atléti’s youth setup, but a big money move to the north of England now appears increasingly likely. If he were to make the switch, what would United be getting?

Hernández is a trusted ally of manager Diego Simeone and occupied a number of positions during his 27 La Liga appearances last term. Wherever he was deployed, Atléti’s results improved.
The side’s win percentage was significantly higher with Hernández in the side, while average goals against decreased markedly. He brought extra stability to an already defensively sound side and won many admirers in the process.
The 22-year-old has plenty of time to improve and is sure to arriving into next season with confidence sky-high after his exploits in Russia this summer. He’s a player who would thrive under José Mourinho, and the United hierarchy should do all they can to get a deal over the line.
