Manchester United Set To Stun Liverpool By Stealing Top Target

By timgarrett IN Premier League,Transfers - 07:45 Jul 11th 2018

Failure to win any silverware meant that the 2017/18 campaign was a disappointing one for Manchester United, despite the fact that they climbed to second in the Premier League table, so better things are expected next time around.

Strengthening the squad will be crucial if the Red Devils are to stand any chance of wrestling the title away from neighbours Manchester City, though the summer signings of Diogo Dalot and Fred have not set too many pulses racing amongst the Old Trafford faithful.

One player who could potentially light up English football, however, and who is being linked with a £22m move to Manchester United that would also see Anthony Martial moving in the opposite direction, is Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

Currently on duty with France at the World Cup in Russia, the long-time Liverpool target has endured a disappointing and injury-hit first season at Camp Nou following his eye-watering £135.5m move to Spanish football back in August.

Despite his lack of playing time, mind you, the 21-year-old has still weighed in with three goals and six assists from his 17 appearances in La Liga, 12 of which have come from the start, though his numbers remain somewhat down on each of the previous two campaigns:

In what was an incredible breakthrough season at Rennes in 2015/16, the pacy and skilful attacker helped himself to 12 goals and six assists in Ligue 1, following that up with six goals and 11 assists for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga in 2016/17:

So impressive were Dembele’s numbers during his solitary season in the French top-flight that Manchester United’s Martial was unable to match him, whilst the fact that only one of the pair has made the French World Cup squad tells you that the Red Devils would be getting the better end of any potential deal.
