Leeds United Set To Secure Back-To-Back Premier League Promotion Winner

By timgarrett IN Championship,Transfers - 08:00 Aug 9th 2018

Leeds United made an electrifying start to the Championship campaign with a 3-1 victory over Stoke on Sunday, and optimism levels have gone through the roof across West Yorkshire as a result.

Hopes that the Marcelo Bielsa era will be a thrillingly successful one look, at this early stage, well placed and, as a result, signing up new recruits should be easier than ever. The offer of a place in this squad is one to be relished, and it appears that Brighton & Hove Albion’s Oliver Norwood believes so too.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Fulham, meaning that he has now achieved promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in each of the last 2 seasons. With another loan move, this time to Elland Road, appearing imminent he’ll be hoping to make it a hattrick.

Norwood was instrumental in Brighton’s 2016/17 campaign, playing in 33 of their Championship fixtures and making a hugely significant contribution.

The south coast side won far more often with Norwood than without and gained more points per game. Having missed out on the title to Newcastle by just 1 point, it must be tempting for fans to wonder what might have been had the Burnley-born man been available more often.

Norwood quickly established himself at Fulham the following year yet, while the club’s fans speak very highly of him, it’s interesting to note that their side actually performed better when he wasn’t in the XI.

Average goals scored per game dropped with Norwood in the side and wins became a less regular occurrence, although it must be stated that a number of the 10 matches he missed were against the division’s table-topping bright lights.

Still, this is a player who knows how to go over the course and distance of a Championship season. He appeared at Wembley in the playoff final last season and went up automatically the season before, and such experience would be invaluable for Leeds.

As a new and exciting season gets going, the signing of Norwood makes perfect sense for all parties. If all goes well, this could be his most thrilling promotion campaign yet.
