Cardiff City Target Last-Gasp Swoop For Proven Premier League Performer

By timgarrett IN Premier League,Transfers - 13:00 Aug 9th 2018

In an era of astronomical fees and exotic signings from around the world, Cardiff City’s summer transfer business has had an unusually homegrown feel this season. Brits Greg Cunningham, Josh Murphy, Bobby Reid and Alex Smithies have all arrived thus far, but manager Neil Warnock is still chasing one final target on deadline day.

The Bluebirds look set to conduct their final piece of business close to home once more, with AFC Bournemouth’s Harry Arter believed in many circles to be edging towards a season-long loan move.

The 28-year-old has been on the English south coast since 2010, making 232 appearances for the Cherries and becoming a firm fan favourite, but it’s now believed that current boss Eddie Howe is willing to let one of his most trusted allies leave in order to gain first-team football.

Having played in the Premier League for the last 3 seasons, Arter would undoubtedly bring some much-needed experience to Cardiff’s squad, but would he bring a boost in quality too?

The London-born midfielder appeared in just 13 of Bournemouth’s 38 Premier League fixtures last season, but he was able to make a strong contribution when he was on the pitch.

Eddie Howe is famed for favouring a possession-based game, and to his undoubted delight, Bournemouth’s average share of the ball rose by almost 10% with Arter on the field.

His diligent defensive work is also highlighted in his statistics, with average goals conceded dropping from 1.8 to 1.2 in the games in which Arter played his part.

As Cardiff prepare for a tough return to the Premier League, they urgently need strength within their ranks. Arter has plenty of ability and a wealth of experience as an underdog at this level, and both would undoubtedly come in extremely useful in the coming months.

Cardiff should do all they can to get the deal over the line before this evening’s deadline and, if they manage it, it could look like a masterstroke come the end of the season.
