Manchester United’s Stunning January Plans For £100m Man

By timgarrett IN Premier League,Serie A,Transfers - 19:45 Sep 3rd 2018

Manchester United put their recent troubles behind them with a 2-0 win over Burnley yesterday, but the feeling remains that improvements still need to be made if they’re to return to their former glory.

Manager José Mourinho has made it clear that he feels reinforcements are needed, while the plane United fans hired to fly the message “Ed Woodward: A Specialist In Failure” told its own story. Old Trafford remains a divided camp.

Yet, while some may see doom and gloom, there are still reasons for optimism. Last season’s 2nd place Premier League finish was a massive improvement on previous campaigns and, while arguably some way behind Manchester City, their squad is not too far off. One more big signing could change everything, and that’s what United are said to be targeting.

Paulo Dybala has seen his playing time at Juventus reduced since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, and he’s reportedly furious about it. After seeing a deadline day move to Real Madrid fail to materialise he’s looking for a way out, and the press believe Mourinho wants to offer him one in January.

Romelu Lukaku was United’s top scorer last season and, with 3 in the Premier League already, looks likely to be again this season. A comparison of his and Dybala’s scoring stats (above), however, does not put the former Everton man’s output in the best light.

Dybala was able to score 6 more goals than Lukaku, and he did so in 7 fewer starts. His minutes per goal ratio was a full 72 better, and his strikes changed the outcome of games far more regularly.

Yet, the wonderful thing for United is that it wouldn’t have to be an either/or scenario. Dybala occupies a deeper position than Lukaku, playing as more of a number 10, and could therefore easily be accommodated in the side alongside the big Belgian.

With both players firing on all cylinders and the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez given the space to do what they do best, United would be a truly formidable proposition. A move for Dybala may be an expensive one, but it’s hard it would represent anything but a perfect investment.
