Which of the big five European leagues is the most competitive?

The Premier League is often billed as being the most competitive in the world, but how does it actually measure up against its major European rivals?

In order to find out, we have looked back at the 2025/26 season in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, comparing the results of the top five against those of the bottom five.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Top 5: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa & Liverpool

Bottom 5: Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Burnley & Wolverhampton Wanderers

Away 13 10 2 45 26 49/75
Overall 30 15 5 97 51 105/150

Although the top five won 60% of their matches overall, each of them dropped points on the road, whilst Arsenal were the only team to enjoy a 100% winning record on home soil. Manchester United left most points on the table, collecting just 18 from a possible 30.

LIGUE 1

Top 5: Paris Saint-Germain, Lens, Lille, Lyon & Marseille

Bottom 5: Le Havre, Auxerre, Nice, Nantes & Metz

Away 17 4 4 42 22 55/75
Overall 37 7 6 93 34 118/150

PSG achieved perfection, winning all ten of their matches against the bottom five, whilst both Lens and Lyon claimed maximum points from their five home games. It was Lille who struggled the most, winning only half of their encounters with the bottom five.

BUNDESLIGA

Top 5: Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Stuttgart & Hoffenheim

Bottom 5: Koln, Werder Bremen, Wolfsburg, Heidenheim & St. Pauli

Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig all went unbeaten against the bottom five, dropping only eight points between them. Hoffenheim performed brilliantly on the road, picking up 13 points, but they only managed seven in front of their own supporters.

SERIE A

Top 5: Inter Milan, Napoli, Roma, Como & AC Milan

Bottom 5: Genoa, Lecce, Cremonese, Hellas Verona & Pisa

Somewhat remarkably, the top five won 24 of their 25 away games against the bottom five, with Roma’s 2-1 defeat at Genoa representing the outlier. That said, the club from the capital were the only one of these sides to manage a 100% winning record on their own patch.

LA LIGA

Top 5: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid & Real Betis

Bottom 5: Levante, Osasuna, Real Mallorca, Girona & Real Oviedo

Overall 35 11 4 101 35 116/150

In front of their own supporters, Barcelona, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid all secured maximum points against the bottom five. It was far more of a struggle for the team in yellow on their travels, however, as they recorded just one victory from five attempts.

Be wary of free football tips pointing you towards shock away results in La Liga, as the 2025/26 campaign showed us that this simply doesn’t happen. In fact, the 1-1 draws that now-relegated Girona secured at Real Madrid and Real Betis were the only examples of dropped points by the top five at home to the bottom five.

Elsewhere, it was the Premier League high-fliers that were most vulnerable on their own patch, failing to win 32% of the time. In fact, three of the eight away wins enjoyed by the strugglers across these five leagues came at the top table of English football.

AWAY RECORD BY LEAGUE

Away Record by League 2025/26 - top 5 teams against bottom 5 teams

Serie A 24 0 1 52 11 72/75
Bundesliga 20 4 1 63 21 64/75

Premier League 13 10 2 45 26 49/75
La Liga 12 9 4 43 26 45/75

When it comes to reliable football tips, you could do worse than backing a top-five Serie A team to win away at a bottom-five opponent. As touched on earlier, this happened a staggering 96% of the time during the 2025/26 campaign.

At the other end of the scale, the cream of La Liga went from complete domination on their own patch to dropping 30 points on the road against the same opposition. Both the Premier League and Ligue 1 were not far behind, with 26 and 20 dropped points respectively.

OVERALL RECORD BY LEAGUE

Overall Record by League 2025/26 - top 5 teams against bottom 5 teams
W D L F A PTS
Serie A 42 6 2 112 31 132/150
Bundesliga 39 8 3 124 41 125/150
Ligue 1 37 7 6 93 34 118/150
La Liga 35 11 4 101 35 116/150
Premier League 30 15 5 97 51 105/150

Somewhat surprisingly, it is the leading teams in Serie A that have proven themselves to be most dominant overall against weaker opposition, securing 88% of the points available and suffering just a couple of defeats.

The Bundesliga comes a reasonably close second, with only 25 points dropped, whilst it seems that the pundits and tipsters were right about the Premier League being the most competitive, on this scale at least, with the leading lights failing to win 40% of the time.
