How is the league formatted?
Known for sponsorship purposes as The Liga BetPlay Dimayor, 20 teams compete in the topflight of Columbian football, with the league ordinarily running from January to December.
What may seem confusing to European football fans, but is quite often the norm in South American football is that the season is divided into two championships:
- Torneo Apertura
- Torneo Finalización
This split season format is a relatively recent innovation for many Latin American football leagues, beginning in Columbia in 2002.
Both competitions have identical three stage structure, which are as follows:
- Each side will play 20 matches in a league format, with each team meeting home and away, plus one extra match against their regional rival.
- The top eight sides will then be split in two groups of four. Each team will play six matches: the other three sides in their group home and away.
- The two group leaders will advance to the final, which is a two-legged affair, with each side hosting one.
The most successful side in the competition’s history is Atlético Nacional with 17 winners medal, including the 2022 Apertura.
Continental Qualification
Eight Columbian sides are rewarded with admission to continental competition based on their position at the end of both championships.
Copa Libertadores de America
Four Columbian teams qualify for CONMEBOL’s elite competition, with the Champions of both the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Finalización qualifying for the group stage.
The team who is the best non-champion throughout both championships and the Champion of the Copa Colombia, which is the Columbian equivalent to the FA Cup, enter this tournament at the second qualification round.
Copa Sudamericana
Argentina and Brazil have six clubs entered into this tournament, with all other CONMEBOL associations having four teams.
The four Columbian sides that qualify for CONMEBOL’s second continental competition are the best performing teams that didn’t manage to qualify for the Copa Libertadores.
Relegation
Relegation to Categoría Primera B is determined by averaging the points total achieved by teams over the previous three seasons. Each year, the bottom two drop into the second tier, being replaced by the two of that division.
