Haaland vs Kane vs Mbappe

The expanded 2026 World Cup offered an opportunity for big names to shine across the pond, with Erling Haaland (7 goals), Harry Kane (6 goals) and Kylian Mbappe (10 goals) all grasping it with both hands.

Debate continues to rage over which of these three European heavyweights is the best in their position, but what do their top-flight records during the 2025/26 campaign tell us about their relative strengths and weaknesses?

Whilst Manchester City and Real Madrid had to settle for second place in the Premier League and La Liga, respectively, Bayern Munich ran away with the Bundesliga. This is reflected in Kane’s frankly obscene return of a goal every 66.17 minutes, with Mbappe and Haaland looking like complete amateurs by comparison.

PERCENTAGE OF TEAM’S GOALS

It is often said that if you can stop Haaland, then you can stop Manchester City, with the Norwegian superstar accounting for just over a third of his team’s goals. Over at Real Madrid, Mbappe was just shy of this mark, whilst the contributions of Luis Diaz and Michael Olise ensured that Bayern Munich were not so reliant upon Kane.

Somewhat incredibly, all three of these guys are hitting the back of the net in more than half of the games that they start. Most strikers would be delighted with Haaland’s return of 58.82%, but Mbappe (68.97%) and Kane (76%) are blowing him out of the water in this particular department.

MINUTES PER GOAL AGAINST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFIERS

The most fascinating thing about these figures is that all three of these strikers have scored at a faster rate against teams that went on to qualify for the Champions League, thus demonstrating their big-game credentials. Amazingly, Kane hit 11 goals in just six matches against this calibre of opposition.

MINUTES PER GOAL AGAINST RELEGATED CLUBS

Whisper it quietly, but we might have found the kryptonite for Messrs Kane and Mbappe, with both men scoring at an alarmingly low rate against teams that were ultimately relegated. There was no such problem for Haaland, however, with the Manchester City man filling his boots against these weaker sides.

FIRST GOALS

The big lesson here is that any tipster who recommends that you look at the first goalscorer odds for Kane is best avoided, as just five of his 36 strikes gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 lead. By way of contrast, both Haaland (12 of 27) and Mbappe (11 of 25) are well worth considering in the first goalscorer market.

LAST GOALS

If the evidence provided last season is anything to go by, then both Haaland and Mbappe have a penchant for wrapping up the scoring, each managing to do so on 11 occasions. It is also worth noting that, between them, these three strikers have accounted for a total of 19 goals in the final ten minutes of play.

THE TRIPLE UP

Given the regularity with which this trio find the net, it is interesting to note that there were nine occasions on which they all scored during the same round of matches. Seven of these took place prior to Christmas, however, so putting together a three-fold football accumulator in the anytime goalscorer market was definitely more worthwhile early in the campaign.

SUMMARY

Any team with designs on winning the Champions League would be delighted to have Haaland, Kane or Mbappe spearheading their attack, albeit that all three come with a completely different playing style.

Manchester City’s Scandinavian star is happy putting the team on his shoulders and feasts against the weak, regularly bookending the scoring to boot. Renowned for making a significant impact on limited touches, the 26-year-old also relishes a physical battle.

Bayern Munich’s English marksman is the most prolific of the trio, reaching new levels against the better teams. At his most effective when dropping into pockets of space and picking out forward runners, the 33-year-old shows no signs of slowing down.

In virtually all of the metrics that we considered, Real Madrid’s Mbappe found himself sandwiched between his two rivals, thus highlighting his ability to do everything well. Extremely quick across the ground, the 27-year-old is capable of scoring all types of goal.

How quickly these guys discover their best form in 2026/27 remains to be seen following deep runs at the expanded World Cup, but they remain at the heart of any football predictions when it comes to hitting the back of the net.
