How is the league formatted?

Known as the Campeonato AFT PlanVItal for sponsorship reasons, the Chilean Primera Division has been running since 1933.

The most successful club in the tournament’s hisotry is Colo-Colo, who have won 32 titles, the last of which came in 2017. Since then, the last four titles have been won by Universidad Católica, the club with the second most championships to their name with 18.

Since 2017, the Chilean Primera Division has not involved an Apertura and Clausura type split season format, as opposed to many other South American football leagues. The format is more typical of European football, with the 16 competing sides facing off against each other twice, home, and away.

Continental Qualification

There are seven teams from Chile’s top tier who qualify for continental competition.

Copa Libertadores de America

The side who wins the Campeonato (Championship), as well as the runners-up, are immediately qualified for the Copa Libertadores group stages, which is CONMEBOL’s elite competition and the equivalent to the UEFA Champions League.

The side that finishes the season in third place enters the Copa Libertadores in the second qualification round.

Copa Sudamericana

The teams which finish between 4th and 7th place each qualify for the first qualification round of the Copa Sudamericana, which is the equivalent to the UEFA Europa League.

Relegation

The two sides with the worst record throughout the season are relegated to Primera B and are replaced by the Champions and Runners-up of the second tier.
