How is the league formatted?

The Ecuadorian topflight, known as Liga Pro or the Serie A, has been in existence since 1957. In 2021 it was ranked by IFFHS as the 18th strongest football league in the world and the 5th strongest in South America.

The most successful club in the country, with 16 titles, is Barcelona S.C., whilst the reigning champions are Independiente del Valle, who celebrated their first title last time out.

Whilst the timing of the Ecuadorian footballing calendar rarely moves from February to December, the structure is very often changed.

The current format was introduced in the 2010 season and consists of three stages. These are:

  1. Each team plays each other once.
  2. The table is reset, with each team facing off once more.
  3. The winners of both stages will meet to decide the Championship. The third and fourth placed teams in an aggregate table will also meet to decide the third best team.

Continental Qualification

Half of the 16 teams in the Ecuadorian Liga Pro qualify for the opportunity to play in CONMEBOL’s top two continental competitions, with four starting off in the Copa Libertadores de America, with the other four in the Copa Sudamericana.

Copa Libertadores de America

The Champions and Runners-up find themselves in the group stage of next season’s competition, potentially being joined by the two next best placed teams based on a season aggregate, who join CONMEBOL’s elite competition at the first stage and second stage of qualification respectively.

Copa Sudamericana

The teams who finish with the fifth to eighth best aggregate record qualify for the first stage of CONMEBOL’s equivalent tournament to the UEFA Europa League. This stage is a two legged play off, with the winner entering the group stage.

Relegation

The two teams who find themselves bottom of the aggregate table come the end of the season are relegated to Serie B.
