What is the format of the Icelandic Premier League and when is it played?

The Icelandic Premier League, also known as the Úrvalsdeild karla - which translates to Men’s Select Division - and since 2019 as The Pepsi Max League features 12 teams competing in a league that runs from May to September.

The fact it is a summer league makes it a great option to bet on when other European winter leagues are on their off-season.

How does relegation and European qualification work in the Úrvalsdeild?

The bottom two teams are automatically relegated to the 1. Deild Karla - replaced in the top tier by the two highest finishing teams in that division.

The champions of Iceland qualify for the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. In 2020 this was Valur.

For the 2020-21 Europa Conference League Iceland will have three qualifiers - FH, Stjarnan and Breioablik - who finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the Úrvalsdeild respectively. This last place would usually have gone to the winner of the Icelandic Cup - but this was abandoned due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Knowing which teams qualify for European spots and which are fighting against relegation can be crucial to winning bets towards the end of the season. Some teams will still be fighting hard and playing at their absolute maximum while others can be “on the beach”. Often this leads to upsets where a team much higher in the table will lose to a relegation candidate because the team higher in the table has less incentive to win the match.
